Hardenability

Because EN24T may be hardened, it is employed in demanding applications where tensile strength, hardness, and wear resistance are crucial factors. The material can be surface hardened up to 60 HRC by heating or nitriding operations after being manufactured in the quenched and tempered, or "T," form. This will increase the material's wear resistance.

Please keep in mind that EN24T round bars larger than 250 mm in diameter may have weaker mechanical qualities when they approach the material's centre in the "T" state. It is said that larger round bars are annealed to improve the mechanical characteristics of the centre core. Increased machinability is another advantage of annealed bar and billet supply.

Impact Resistance

Another outstanding quality of EN24T, or 817M40T as it is often called, is that it has excellent impact values even at low operating temperatures. As a result, EN24T is frequently used in offshore applications like hydraulic bolt tensioners and marine handling equipment.

Machinability

Although EN24T is described as a product that is ready to be machined, it is more difficult to manufacture and it is essential to use a carbide throughout the machining process. When EN24T is hardened, also referred to as 817M40T, it can be machined with stainless tip tools. Compared to other engineering steels like EN19 and EN16, shear loading is more likely.

Applications

EN24T also known as 817M40T brings an excellent combination of hardenability, strength, and wear resistance. examples of the applications in which it is used include:

  • Power transmission gears, cams
  • Marine handling equipment
  • Heavy-duty axles
  • Bolts, shafts, and studs
  • Hydraulic bolt tensioners
